About Mediterranean Observatory

The Permanent Observatory on the “Economic Relations between Italy and the Mediterranean Area” is a project realized by SRM and born thanks to the sponsorship of Compagnia di San Paolo with the aim to monitor and study the dynamics and the impact of the mutual economic relation between Italy (and especially South Italian Regions) and Mediterranean Area.

SRM has established this new field of research activities in June 2011 establishing an indoor three researchers department and developing a network of foreign correspondents. SRM also intend to develop a strong network of relations with other national and international Research Centers on Mediterranean. (see networks)

The Observatory specifically analyzes two geographic areas − Southern Mediterranean Area (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt) and Eastern Mediterranean Area (Israel, Lebanon, Syria and Turkey) – investigating the commercial, financial, infrastructural, entrepreneurial, energetic and technological inter-exchange relations, with special attention to business indicators and normative-institutional dynamics affecting the Euro-Mediterranean Area. The Adriatic Mediterranean Area (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo and Montenegro) is investigated separately. Since 2015 the analysis has been extended to the relations with the Gulf countries (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates).

The online platform then offers constantly updated contents on the economic dynamics affecting the Mediterranean Area: data, papers, in-depth studies and interviews with subjects who cover strategic roles in the economic context of the Mediterranean Area. Moreover, it offers an information service dedicated to: news relating enterprises operating in that area; market evolutions; legislative innovation; and European policies.

This website is directly linked with SRM’s other Observatory, on Maritime Economy, with which the SRM MED portal has established necessary and appropriate functional and operational synergies.
