Annual Report 2014 Economic Relations between Italy and the Mediterranean Area

The Report, this year in its 4th edition, as usual provides an analysis of the relations that Italy has with the countries lining the southern and southeast shore of the Mediterranean basin and it also expands this analysis to the Gulf area in the part which refers to the finance and banking systems. The first part – Economy, trade and businesses – opens with an examination of the trade relations between Italy and its main international competitors within the southern Mediterranean area offering a profile of the most recent economic developments of these countries. In addition, there is an important section dedicated to the study of the presence of Italian companies in Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco which is followed by a chapter dealing with the economic situation of the three countries. The second part of the Report – Finance and financial flows – offers a description of the bank and financial systems of both the southern Mediterranean and Gulf countries particularly focusing on Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco. The development of the financial systems in the MENA area has been constant over the last few years, with efficiency and profitability performances which proved better than those of the European banks. Another chapter deals with the analysis of the investment strategies of the Mediterranean and Gulf sovereign wealth funds with particular reference to the investment potentials that are in Italy. The third part – Logistic infrastructures and renewable energies – deals with these two important research topics of SRM’s Mediterranean Observatory and includes a chapter about competitiveness in the Italian port and logistic systems and a contribution to the development of renewable energies that comprises of a focus on the ongoing projects and investments that are required in the coming years.
