MED & Italian Energy Report 2020

The Second “MED & Italian Energy Report” is the result of the synergy between SRM and the ESL@EnergyCenter of the Politecnico di Torino.  The Joint Research Center of European Commission and the Matching Energies Foundation also contributed to the creation of the Report. Matching Energies Foundation

The Covid-19 pandemic – and its consequent lockdown measures – had huge effects on lowering industry production, stopping entire sectors of economic activities and discontinuing some important global value chains. All this situation also affected the energy sector. The impact was clearly driven by the demand side with a strong reduction in energy consumption. In this framework, the Mediterranean Area represents a relevant arena in which to firstly implement and test new recovery plans to counteract the negative impacts of the recent pandemic. In the future decades, it could become an archetype of a fruitful approach to the energy transition. The Basin Area, coupling the renewable potential with the presence of relevant electricity and gas infrastructures, could be a fertile area for developing and applying innovative solutions to integrate electricity and gas system and building new flexible energy systems. Furthermore the Med Area has a huge role in the maritime transport, finding itself on a privileged route for the trade of oil and gas.

In this second edition, SRM and ESL@Energy Center have developed as much as possible a holistic and dynamic perspective of the potential scenarios with a core focus on renewableas as  key to foster energy transition and Mediterranean cooperation, also looking at new technologies and the emergence of green electricity, gas and hydrogen synergies. In the light of Covid-19 pandemic and its consequences, these opportunities and challenges could really allow Italy and the Euro-Mediterranean area to take on a leading role in carrying out and enhancing the already started energy transition process.

The First “MED & Italian Energy Report. Energy sources, flow and strategies of Italy between Europe and the Mediterranean” is the result of the synergy between SRM and the ESL@EnergyCenter of the Energy Department of the Politecnico di Torino. The Institutions are planning and implementing a project for an annual survey on Energy & Mediterranean, based on a new conception of science-based think-tank, integrating data analytics, numerical modelling, geo and socio-policy analysis and geomatics. The MED & Italian Energy Report 2019 is the first output of this joint effort. The Joint Research Center of European Commission and the Matching Energies Foundation also contributed to the creation of the Report. Matching Energies Foundation

Currently fossil fuels are crucial for the Mediterranean region in terms of production, consumption and transfer toward Central/Northern Europe. Mediterranean plays a role of “energy highway” for flows coming from other areas and directed to Europe and to the world; 30% of world oil and almost 75% of all the other energy resources transit through this basin directed towards Italy and the other European countries.

In the future, Mediterranean can play a major role in energy transition toward renewable energy sources. SRM and ESL@Energy Center are planning and implementing a project for an annual survey on Energy & Mediterranean, based on a new conception of science-based think-tank, integrating data analytics, numerical modelling, geo and socio-policy analysis and geomatics.

Annual Report 2017 | Economic Relations between Italy and the Mediterranean Area

Support our research project, register yourself and purchase the report

With the 7th MED Annual Report we continue our studies and monitoring of the trend of bilateral trade flows between Italy and the MENA area (Middle East and North Africa), highlighting the competitive position of Italian manufacturing and its penetration capacity in these markets. As emerges in the first part of the book, the commercial exchange with the Area has grown by more than 50% over the last few years despite the socio-political upheaval in some countries on the Southern shore of the Mediterranean and an economic crisis not yet completely overcome. The Mediterranean area is now much more central in the world geo-economy (for example, China’s Belt & Road Initiative in Mare Nostrum or the growing interest of Germany towards Africa) and, in this dynamic and competitive scenario, Italy has the concrete opportunity to become a strategic “bridge” with Europe. In this perspective, the monographic part of the Report is dedicated to the analysis of maritime traffic and portuality, with insights that concern the ZES (Special Economic Zone) instrument, increasingly widespread in the world and which is going to be tested also in Southern Italy thanks to the so-called “Mezzogiorno Decree”, and innovation and research in the agri-food sector in Israel, one of the countries of interest by the SRM Mediterranean Observatory.

Israel is a Country that is progressively establishing itself as an economic power in the Mediterranean and in the global economic scenario. This Report takes an innovative approach in the content of the analysis and the method by which this analysis has been carried out. It is based on three fundamental pillars that also represent the main parts of the study: 1) import-export relations between Italy and Israel; 2) the Agritech sector; 3) the shipping and port logistics sector. The latter two sectors are very strategic for Israeli economy.
